Manny's Drum Shop - The Gene Krupa Story
At 13, I (Dudley J. Taw) hung out in a drum shop in New York city called Manny's. Manny as a formidable man that always wore a mohair sweater and Stetson hat. He was absolutely the best. He was drums. Manny always made sure my dollar stretched into 10. My father wanted to buy me a cheap Taiwan drum kit. Manny would not hear of it – told him he'd give me a set before he let him do that to me.... hence my first set of drums – a black lacquered 4 piece set of Ludwig's. I thought for sure I died and went to heaven!

One day while digging through the infamous cymbal piles (one of my favorite pastimes) - Gene Krupa walked in! Manny said, “Hey Gene....this kid's got a great set of chops!” Gene stood there looking at me – I was convinced he was at least 100 feet tall! My hands were sweating as he handed me a set of sticks and said, “let's hear what you got, kid!”

I was studying with Ralph Pace at the time. Ralph felt he had taken me as far as he could – so Gene became my teacher. You would not be there if you did not have talent – but talent was nothing if you did not develop it – was his thinking.

I had the honor and privilege of studying with Gene Krupa for over 5 years. Then my father was transferred to Cleveland. When I left, Gene gave me an autographed picture that hangs in my shop to this very day.
